Mooring
CHANCE® Helical Anchors and MANTA RAY® earth anchors provide reliable mooring solutions for municipal and private harbors. Both systems install quickly, minimize disturbance to the harbor bottom, and provide verifiable performance—an efficient alternative to concrete blocks or drag anchors.
CHANCE® Helical Mooring Anchors
CHANCE® Helical Anchors have been field-proven for tensile loads up to 200,000 lbs. and are widely trusted in hurricane-prone regions where insurance companies often provide incentives for their use. They are installed into the harbor bottom using hydraulic rotary equipment with anti-torque devices, either from work boats or by divers. Once the helical plates are advanced through silt into bearing soils, chains or lines can be securely connected to moorings or floating platforms.
Benefits of CHANCE® Helical Mooring Anchors
- High capacity and long-term performance
- Immediate loading after installation
- Not impacted by silt or high water conditions
- Can be removed or extended if needed
- Lower life-cycle costs compared to concrete moorings
MANTA RAY® Mooring Anchors
MANTA RAY® anchors are percussion-driven into the harbor bottom and then proof-loaded at lock-off to confirm capacity. They are an effective option for light to moderate mooring loads, tight-access conditions, and rapid installations. Installed with compact underwater tools, they minimize disturbance and require no large ballast blocks or excavation. Note: MANTA RAY® anchors are not removable.
Benefits of MANTA RAY® Mooring Anchors
- Fast installation with diver-operated compact tools
- Proof-load verification at lock-off
- No large blocks, no spoils, minimal harbor impact
- Well-suited for rapid response and light to moderate loads
- Not removable
When to Use Each Product
- CHANCE® Helical Anchors — choose for higher mooring capacities, engineered torque-correlated design, and when removability may be required.
- MANTA RAY® Anchors — choose for lighter mooring demands, limited-access installs, and when fast, proof-verified performance is the priority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are these anchors better than concrete blocks or drag anchors?
Helical and MANTA RAY® anchors provide predictable, verifiable capacity without relying on mass or drag. They install quickly with minimal disturbance, require no large block handling, and can be immediately proofed. This results in safer, more economical mooring systems with lower environmental impact.
Are the anchors removable?
Helical anchors can be removed or extended if needed. MANTA RAY® anchors are not removable once driven and proof-locked.
How is capacity verified?
Helical anchors correlate capacity to installation torque and can be proof-tested if required. MANTA RAY® anchors are proof-loaded at lock-off to confirm holding power during installation.
When should I choose helicals?
Helicals are often the preferred solution when higher mooring loads, stringent testing, or engineering sign-off are required. Their torque-correlated design is widely accepted in critical marine applications.

Your Solution for Other Tiedown Applications
CHANCE® and MANTA RAY® anchors are also used in other tiedown applications where uplift and lateral restraint are critical:
- Guy Anchoring — towers, poles, and guyed structures
- Anti-Buoyancy — pipelines, tanks, and buried structures in high groundwater
